Vietnam’s Rice Exports: The Challenge Is Not Selling More, but Selling at Higher Value

In the first eight months of 2026, Vietnam exported approximately 6.03 million tons of rice, generating nearly USD 2.91 billion. Compared with the same period in 2025, export volume declined by 5%, while export value fell by 10.7%, with the average export price at around USD 481.5 per ton.

Amid abundant global supply and increasing competition, Vietnam’s rice industry is shifting its focus from higher volume to higher value. Some certified high-quality and low-emission Vietnamese rice products have achieved prices above USD 1,000 per ton in markets such as Japan, the EU, and Australia.

To increase export value, businesses need to strengthen raw material areas, quality control, traceability, processing, branding, and market diversification. These factors will be increasingly important in enhancing the competitiveness and sustainable development of Vietnamese rice in global markets.
